Hussam Abbas Fadhli

Beloved husband, father, healer, friend, and artist, Dr. Hussam A. Fadhli, passed away on September 27, 2011 at the age of 83, following complications from surgery.Dr. Fadhli was born in Baghdad, Iraq on April 24, 1928. He attended medical school in Baghdad, and came to the United States in the 195039s to continue his medical studies. A man of tremendous heart and intelligence, Dr. Fadhli used the gift of his hands to become a highly skilled thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon. Following a move to Port Arthur in 1965, he established the first open heart surgery program in south Jefferson county. During his almost 30 years of medical practice, Dr. Fadhli touched the lives of many families, healing their loved ones with a mixture of skill, great caring, and humor. In addition to caring for his own patients, Dr. Fadhli also taught many young surgeons, both at UTMB in Galveston and in Baghdad, Iraq, and did pioneering testing on early versions of heart valve replacements that were the basis for units still used today.The skill of his hands, and his love of beautiful things, lead Dr. Fadhli to pursue a second career, that of successful artist. His bronze sculptures are displayed in many places around the United States, and abroad, and he is well known for his elegant representations of Arabian horses.He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Brigitte children Sam, Amy, Adam, and Delilah and their spouses seven grandchildren sisters Nihal and Amahl numerous nieces, nephew, and cousins.A private memorial gathering will be held for family and close friends.
