Earlene "Sugie" Hughes

November 29, 1930 — February 16, 2021

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.

Earlene went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Calder Woods Assisted Living in Beaumont. Earlene “Sugie” Hughes was born on November 29, 1930 in Zavalla, Texas to sharecroppers Charlie and Callie Ann Branch. Sugie, as she was affectionately known, grew up and spent most of her life in Port Neches, Texas, where she raised her family.

Earlene is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alton H. Hughes; sister, Dixie Mason; and nephew, Reginal “Ozzie” Osborne.

Those left to cherish her memory are the loves of her life daughters, Carolyn Hughes of Lumberton, TX; Catherine Galmor and her husband, David, whom Sugie loved as her own son, of Beaumont, TX; and Scherry Lynn Hughes and her husband, Tom of Lumberton, TX; grandchildren, David McCurley, Jr., Jonathon McCurley, and Jennifer Lynn Hughes; great grandchildren, Andrew, Madison, and Colton McCurley, Heavenleigh Hughes and Harleigh Jenkins.

A Celebration of Sugie’s Life will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Melancon’s Funeral Home, Nederland. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.

The family of Sugie would like to give a special thank you to the Administrative staff of Calder Woods, Ben Mazzara, David Long, and retired Art Bell-Isle and the wonderful staff at the Harbour in Calder Woods, Compassion Hospice and Buckner Hospice for the love and care they provided to our mother.

The love between a mother and daughter is a bond of the strongest kind. It is a love of the present, interwoven with memories of the past and dreams of the future. Mother, we love you dearly and now you are free to be with the Lord, your daddy, and sister you missed so much.

The family appreciates the care that Tiny gave to our mother for the past nine years. Your tender loving care is great appreciated and you truly are an angel in disguise.

Due to Coronavirus-19 we request that friends and relatives practice social distancing while attending Sugie’s visitation and service. All guests are required to wear a face mask before entering Melancon’s Funeral Home.
