Griffin Matthew Barnett, age 6, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020. Griffin was born December 30, 2013 in Houston. Griffin had a contagious smile and vibrant personality. At only 6 years of age he became a testimony to many near and far. He loved the outdoors, he loved hunting and fishing, also swimming and swinging with his sister. He loved sports especially basketball and baseball. He had a passion for basketball games at Lamar University and cheering on his favorite player Colton Weisbrod. He was an avid Nederland Bulldog fan and enjoyed watching the Bulldogs play football and especially basketball, where he cheered on his favorites… Carter, Hayden, Chase, and Jake. He loved police so much and he had Santa bring his own police car where he spent many evenings driving his sister around. Orange and Big Foot was his favorite. Griffin loved his family and friends, his teacher Mrs. Gutierrez and his classmates. He always enjoyed the holidays and birthday parties spent with his family. He loved his entire medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital and developed many special relationships, especially with his nurses Tanya, Bailey, Ellie, Amanda, Monica, Omar and Carrie.
A mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland with Father John Hughes officiating under the direction of Melancon’s Funeral in Nederland. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County in Nederland. A gathering of the family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2020 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rosary to be prayed at 4:00 p.m.
Griffin is survived by his parents, Aaron and Chelcie Barnett of Nederland; his sister, Addison Barnett also of Nederland; his grandparents, David and Tricia Concienne of Nederland, and Jim and Nina Barnett of Alvin; his great grandparents, Jamie Barnett of Vidor and Patsy Herring of Nederland; his aunts and uncles Todd and Joni Concienne and their son Aaron Hiatt, and daughter and son-in-law Emily and Landon Procella, Toby and Mandy Concienne and their son Carter, and John and Ashley Concienne and their daughter Aubrey and son Kade, and many more aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his great grandparents, Virginia Barnett, Dru and Dot Stephenson, Anthony and Dot Concienne, Charles and Ginny Safar, and Buddy Herring. Also, his uncle, Jimmy Barnett, and cousin, Josh LeBeouf.
The family would like to thank Griffin’s grandparents, David and Tricia Concienne and family for the exceptional care given to Griffin during his life’s journey. Also, a special thanks to the Texas Children’s Hospital surgeons, Dr. McKenzie, Dr. Frasier, Dr. Meri, and Dr. Hari, to name a few of the special medical team giving care to Griffin. The family would also like to thank Griffin’s heart donor, Anthony “Petey” and the Contreras family for giving him this second chance of life he lived to the fullest. We will forever be grateful for this selfless gift you gave us.
Finally, the family would like to extend all their love and gratitude to the community and all of Griffin’s prayer warriors who have supported our family during this journey. We love you and will never forget all the love and prayers we have received. We hope the gift of Griffin will always be remembered and cherished in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known him.
