Sue "Granny" Harmon

June 28, 1931 — September 16, 2020

Sue Taylor Painter Harmon (Granny) was born June 28, 1931 in Elkins, West Virginia to Clifford Andrew and Cynthia Jane Champe Painter. She closed her eyes and went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 16, 2020.

Born and raised in the hills of West Virginia near Elk River, she told many a story of riding a rail cart to school. She would walk to school in the snow and enjoyed waiting for the trains to come by. She told stories of the engineer throwing her penny candy, and of her Momma feeding the hobos and even letting them stay in the barn when they needed rest.

She was involved in girl scouts and got the biggest kick out of singing "I'm a Seneca" to her kids and grandkids... You had to hear her sing it to totally understand. While in high school, she was a majorette and also met the love of her life, Bob Harmon. She and Bob were married and moved to Borger, Texas for work with the US Rubber Company. This eventually brought them to Port Neches, Texas in the early 1950s where they purchased their first home on 7th Street ... that home was, and still is, the "family home". It is filled with so much love and memories made by all the family and friends that have lived and gathered at "Granny's House".

Sue was an extraordinary lady giving her time, love, faith and guidance to all she came into contact with. She was involved in PTA, past president of the Lion's Club, a member of First United Methodist Church of Port Neches, the Wednesday Bridge Club and worked for over 40 years as an Office Manager. Upon retirement, she and Bob moved to Hemphill, Texas (as we all call it, the Lake). Best known for her warm hugs, big smile, generous heart and...good cooking. Granny loved plants and loved to garden. She spent many summers picking and canning vegetables with her sisters, Eleanor and Connie.

Everyone who knew Granny, knew it was all about family for her. Every school play, activity, hunt, ballgame...she was there. Granny's home was the one all the kids came to. Someone asked "how many grandkids did Granny have?" The answer, more than you can imagine ... She was and is GRANNY to ALL ! She loved each and every one like her own. When you entered her home, you were FAMILY and treated so. Granny's loving heart and spirit will be truly missed, but will live on through the many lives she has touched.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Cliff and Cynthia; husband, Bob Harmon; son, Dale Harmon; son-in-law, Donald Murphy; and sister, Eleanor Bickford. She is survived by son and special friend, Craig Harmon and JoAnn Flowers of Hemphill, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Jill Suzanne and John Wills of Port Neches, Texas; daughter-in-law, Susie Harmon of Port Neches, Texas; sister, Connie Chapman of Newton, Texas; brother-in-law, Lee Bickford of Newton, Texas; grandchildren, Jasun Harmon of Lake Charles, Louisiana; Corey Dale Harmon & wife, Brandi of Orange, Texas; Cindy Jill Shoemaker and husband, Buck of Hemphill, Texas; James Murphy and wife, Brooke of Port Neches, Texas; Kevin Dale Murphy and wife, Jennifer of Hamshire, Texas; Sarah Jill Bennett and husband, Jason of Nederland, Texas; and Caleb Dale Harmon and wife, Miranda of Port Neches, Texas.
